Three Castle Head Farm
Welcome
A visit to Crookhaven would not be complete without a wander around the mystical, magical Three Castle Head, a unique property situated on the tip of the Mizen Peninsula.
Walkers are rewarded with stunning views of the rugged Irish coastline and the Atlantic Ocean plus a deep-rooted sense of bygone days as they sit and stare at the beautiful lake and the remains of the 12th Century Dunlough Castle.
Three Castle Head farm is a 250-acre working sheep farm run by Lukas and Joanne Ungerer and has been the Ungerer family home since the mid 70s when the family decided to settle here having come for a visit from their native Alsace.
More recently the farm has been expanded to include a café/restaurant and holiday rental accommodation.

Dunlough Castle
Dunlough Castle, one of the earliest promontory forts in Ireland, stands on the edge of a deep, tranquil lake and comes with its own legends and – so people say – a ghost called The White Lady.
It is the oldest of the O’ Mahoney castles, built by Donagh na Aimrice O’ Mahoney in 1207, soon after the Norman invasion. A scholar and traveller to the Holy Land, Donagh “The Migratory” was renowned for his generosity. He built his three-towered castle on the site of an ancient Celtic promontory fort. Its walls run from the edge of the cliff, connecting the three towers eastwards to the lake.
There are 40 acres behind the castle known as the “Island” which rise sharply creating an impregnable stronghold with a spectacular view of the surrounding land and sea from the Mizen Head to the Beara peninsula and beyond.
It is an enchanting venue for weddings and other private events and a unique location for photo shoots and filming.
A car park is open to visitors from the beginning of April through to the end of December. The walk is closed to the public for the months of January, February and March.
Lukas and Joanne, who hails from Wexford and met her future husband 18 years ago, have hosted many events in the cafe area including weddings, pop up dining experiences and birthday lunches. They have also catered for film crews and fashion shoots. Lukas has a background in metal working and silver smithing. Joanne worked in fashion design before switching to hospitality.
