Crookhaven Harbour Sailing Club

Welcome

A corner of the village opposite one of the piers comes alive during the months of June, July and August when more than 100 children flock to the sailing club to learn the seamanship crafts and skills that will keep them safe on the water.

The well-run, warm and friendly club was named Ireland’s Training Centre of the Year in 2017 – a tribute to a team of young, dedicated and energetic instructors, backed by a strong and active committee.  Safety is paramount when young people are learning skills that will last them throughout their lives.  At the end of the first course, they feel confident and capable on the water but more than that – they make lifelong friends.

Sailing Courses

The club is best known for its Irish Sailing Association (ISA) accredited courses throughout July. These courses cater to a range of skill levels, from beginners taking their first steps in sailing to advanced sailors honing their competitive edge. The program covers everything from Level 1 “Start Sailing” to Level 4.5 for experienced sailors, with a dedicated Cadet Program for younger enthusiasts.

Dinghies are provided for beginner levels, while sailors at Level 3 and beyond often bring their own boats to continue refining their skills. The sailing courses offer participants an opportunity to develop both technical abilities and a love for the sea in a safe, structured environment.

During the summer months, CHSC hosts a variety of weekend races that bring together both local sailors and visitors. The club’s fleet includes popular dinghy classes like Lasers, Mirrors, Topaz, and Optimists. These events are not just about competition but also about fostering camaraderie among sailors. With sponsorship from local businesses, races often come with exciting prizes and plenty of good-natured fun.

The spirit of CHSC extends beyond just sailing; it’s a social anchor in the community. From informal gatherings to beach barbecues, there’s always something happening around the club.

Applications for the current year’s sailing courses open in January for all courses.  As well as the Juniors, more advanced courses take youngsters up through the Levels, running throughout the summer months.  Demand is always high so early booking is wise.  Children must be at least 10 years old and all applicants must join the Club first.

Social membership is available for parents and others who simply want to help and join in the fun on the water.
